Swiss Family Launches Europe’s First Solar-Assisted Electric Tractor

Innovation comes in many forms, and for the Knüsel family in Switzerland, it took the shape of Europe's first all-electric, solar-assisted tractor. Led by Sepp Knüsel, this ambitious family project started back in 2019, thanks to the combined efforts of Sepp and his four daughters. The Rigitrac SKE 40 is a remarkable feat that not only aims to enhance sustainability in agriculture but also secures a spot in the homes and farms of five different countries.

What inspired this creative endeavor? The family noticed an abundance of solar panels on farms and wanted to harness that energy for a greater purpose. The prototype was born, and after years of hard work, they succeeded in creating a tractor that blends tradition with future-friendly technology. And it's not just eco-conscious farmers who are interested; this innovative machine even made it into a popular video game, Farming Simulator!

This journey hasn't been without its challenges. Sepp and his daughters had to innovate and collaborate closely with suppliers to develop all the necessary components for mass production. But their hard work paid off, leading to the prestigious Watt d’Or award in 2025, acknowledging their groundbreaking contributions to energy technology. Who would have thought a tractor could become a symbol of hope for greener farming?
