San Diego Tourism Woes: Hotel Occupancy Drops as City Faces Budget Shortfall

San Diego's tourism industry is facing a tough time, with hotel occupancy rates dipping and visitors seeing the city as an increasingly costly spot. The Marriott San Diego Gaslamp Quarter, right in the heart of the city, reported occupancy plummeting to around 70 percent. Jeffrey Burg, the hotel's general manager, unveiled that expectations for a strong start in 2025 wound up falling flat.

A recent hike in transient occupancy tax, meant to help fund local projects, is expected to bring in nearly $7.5 million less than projected for 2026. As more travelers decide to skip the trip and stay at home, the financial strain is weighing heavily on hotel workers. Burg pointed out that if demand doesn't bounce back soon, staffing cuts could be on the table as many hotels schedule staff based on occupancy levels.

Despite these uphill challenges, there’s still a spark of hope. The San Diego Tourism Authority claims that several major events slated for the latter half of the year could pump life back into the tourism scene. It's a precarious balance, and as the holiday season nears, only time will tell if San Diego can reinvent itself as the must-visit destination it once was. Will it recapture travelers' hearts or are we in for a long, sun-soaked wait?
