Escondido Hero: 100-Year-Old Pilot Receives Medal of Honor for Korean War Bravery

When it comes to heroics, few stories match the extraordinary life of Royce Williams, a 100-year-old resident of Escondido. This retired Navy captain recently received the Congressional Medal of Honor for his bravery during a fierce dogfight in the Korean War, proving that true heroism doesn't always receive the spotlight it deserves. In 1952, Royce found himself facing off against seven Soviet MiG fighter jets, managing to shoot down four of them and returning to base with his plane riddled by enemy fire—263 bullet holes to be exact!

For over 50 years, Royce kept this intense episode a secret, not even sharing it with his wife or his naval aviator brother. Imagine the weight of that story tucked away for decades! It wasn’t until Soviet records were declassified in 2016 that the world finally learned of his daring actions. Thanks to the efforts of military veterans and elected officials who campaigned for Royce's recognition, his incredible story is now being honored.

Royce's journey is a celebration of bravery, resilience, and the often-overlooked “hidden heroes” who serve. As Royce himself reflected on that day in the skies, he said, "It was like God giving David a task of Goliath—only I had seven Goliaths." So here's to Royce Williams, who may have been "the forgotten hero of the forgotten war," but his legacy will surely endure.
