In the wee hours of Saturday morning, an East San Diego apartment complex was rocked by a fire that had residents leaping out of bed. Thanks to a rapid response from local firefighting crews, who arrived shortly after 3 a.m. with six fire engines and several medics, the flames were contained before they could wreak havoc on the two-story building.
Officials explained that the fire originated from a utility closet on the ground floor, and fortunately, the damage was minimal. Captain Jason Shanley remarked that the firefighters’ quick actions prevented any major destruction, with only smoke affecting the apartments and a broken window resulting from radiant heat.
An adult and a child were evaluated due to smoke inhalation but thankfully avoided hospitalization. It turns out that the initial report of someone trapped inside had a happy ending: the person was awakened by smoke and made a safe escape. As the Red Cross stepped in to help those affected, we can only wonder how many more people will greet the morning with a story that starts with the words, "You won't believe what happened last night..."
