San Diego's streets bustled early one Thursday morning as hundreds of volunteers and county staff embarked on the annual Point-in-Time Count, a vital initiative aimed at assessing the region’s homeless population. The count, running from 4-8 a.m., saw around 1,700 dedicated individuals braving the morning chill to gather important data. County Supervisor Paloma Aguirre emphasized the critical nature of this collaboration, stating how gathered insights would help steer resources and funding towards those in need.

Last year’s count showed some promising results, with a reported 7% decrease in homelessness across the county, now totaling just under 10,000 individuals. This is down from over 10,600 the previous year, indicating a positive shift in community efforts to tackle the homelessness crisis. As Deacon Jim Vargas, president and CEO of Father Joe’s Villages, noted, this face-to-face interaction allows volunteers to connect unhoused neighbors with life-changing resources.

The Regional Task Force on Homelessness organized the event, ensuring that volunteers were equipped to conduct brief surveys and accurate headcounts. Following this impactful event, Serving Seniors will host a resource fair to further assist older adults with essential services.
